MM2 chroma guide: what chromas are and why the premium varies

By MM2 Values TeamPublished 8 min read

Everyone knows a chroma is worth more than the plain godly. What surprises people is how much that "more" moves around. On our list right now the premium runs from about +9% over the base all the way to 44x, with the median chroma at roughly 7.5x. This guide explains what a chroma is, where that premium comes from, and gives you the full live table so you never have to guess.

What a chroma actually is

A chroma is a godly with a shifting, rainbow-ish finish that cycles through colours as you hold it. Underneath it is the same knife or gun as the base version: same model, same animations, nothing different in a round. The whole difference is the paint job and the odds.

Chromas usually come from the same box or event as their base godly, at a far lower drop rate. Some were also crafted or salvaged during events. That lower rate is the only reason a chroma is worth more, and it is also why the premium is so uneven: the rate was never the same from one item to the next.

Where the premium comes from

Three things set the gap between a chroma and its base, in our experience:

The result is that "a chroma is about 2x" is a myth. It is closer to a coin toss which side of 3x you land on, and the tails are enormous in both directions.

Every chroma against its base (live)

47 pairs from the value list, sorted by premium. Recomputed whenever the feed changes, so this is what the market says today. Where the feed lists a chroma under two tiers we show it once.

Collector chromas: 10x and up (18)

The chroma is a different asset class from the base. These trade in stacks of other godlies, and the base is basically irrelevant to the price.

Standard premium: 2x to 10x (22)

What most people picture when they say "chroma". Worth meaningfully more, not absurdly more.

Barely a premium: under 2x (7)

The chroma was never really rare. Treat these as the base godly with a small bonus, and do not let anyone tell you the shiny one is worth double.

FAQ

Is a chroma always worth more than the base godly?

On our list, yes, every chroma is worth at least a little more than its base. But "a little" is the key word for 7 of the 47 pairs, where the premium is under 2x. Always check the specific pair rather than assuming a big gap.

How rare are chromas in MM2?

Much rarer than the base godly from the same box or event, but the exact odds were never the same across items, which is why the premium varies so much. A chroma that was almost as common as its base ends up priced almost the same.

Is it a fair trade to give a chroma for its base plus adds?

Only if the adds cover the whole premium. For a 2.8x chroma that means the adds have to be worth nearly twice the base. Put the exact items in the trade checker; guessing is how people lose chromas.

Why do two chromas of similar godlies have such different values?

Supply. Two godlies can be worth about the same while one chroma was unboxed thousands of times and the other only a few hundred. The value of the base tells you nothing about how many chromas exist.
