The numbers come from the community trade feed, which we sync with several times a day. When you open a post you are seeing what those items are worth right now, so you can judge a trade on arithmetic rather than on how confident the other player sounds.

Posting a trade that actually gets taken
Price your own side first. Look up what you are offering on the value list before you post. Most trades that sit untouched are simply asking for more than they give.
Ask for a range, not one item. Listing three or four things you would accept at a similar value multiplies the number of players who can make your trade work.
Leave a little room.An offer pitched a few percent in the other player's favour usually closes far faster than one priced exactly even, and costs you very little.
Re-check before you accept. Values shift. A trade you posted last week may not be fair today. The totals on the card update, but your expectations should too.

How do I know if an MM2 trade is a win or a lose?
Compare the totals, not the item counts. If the side you receive is worth more than the side you give, it is a win; inside about 5% either way it is fair; below that you are losing value. Every post on the feed shows both totals so the answer is on the card.
What counts as a fair MM2 trade?
A fair trade is one where both sides land within roughly 5% of each other in MM2 trading values. Values move a little day to day, so insisting on an exact match costs you deals that were perfectly reasonable.
Why do MM2 trade values change?
They track what the community is actually trading. When an item gets released again, or a big trader dumps a stack, supply rises and the value drifts down. We sync with the community feed several times a day, so the feed reflects that rather than a list frozen months ago.
Should I trade several small items for one big one?
It can be fair, but check it first. A pile of low-tier items often totals far less than the single godly it is aimed at, which is the most common way players lose value without noticing.
