A tier, not a price.
Ancient is the tier above godly. Most came from the big seasonal events. The Christmas ones lean icy (Icebreaker, Icepiercer, Ice Wing). The Halloween ones lean spooky (Harvester, Batwing, Hallowscythe). How you got one changed year to year: sometimes crafting, sometimes a rare drop, sometimes a reward that turned out harder to earn then anyone expected.
There are only fourteen ancients. One of them, Nik's Scythe, is priced so high it is not really tradeable. It is named after the game's developer and very few exist. The other thirteen run from 15 up to 17,500, which is a wild spread for one tier.
Ancients are the event tier. Each one is tied to a specific year, and once that event ended the supply stopped. That is the whole reason the old ones are worth what they are.
The badge looks impressive and the prices do not always match. Ice Wing and Nik's Scythe share a tier and almost nothing else. Log Chopper and Gingerscope are the same story.
Small tier, big reputation. Fourteen items total, and most players will never own one. That scarcity is real, but it is not spread evenly across the fourteen.

How ancient trading works in MM2
New traders assume any ancient beats any godly. It does not. Ice Wing at 15 loses to a Darkbringer. Several ancients trade below a mid godly. Look at the value, not the tier label.
The ancients above 1,000 trade as stacks. Several godlies plus a chroma or two to balance. These are the trades where a mistake costs the most, so slow down and check the calculator twice.
If someone leads with the word ancient instead of the item name, be careful. That is usually someone hoping the tier does the selling for them.
Owning an ancient does not make you rich. Owning the right ancient might. Check which one you have before you turn down offers.
